Cedar Centre is at a exciting phase of its development. We are part of the Federation of three Special Schools and work together with Downs Park and Patcham House, both Special Schools in Brighton.

We are able to share ideas, resources and expertise; we have joint inset days and staff meetings. However we are very eager to keep our own ' uniqueness'.

We are a school for pupils with complex needs and cater for a wide range of special needs including moderate learning difficulties, attachment difficulties, Austistic Spectrum Condition, speech, language and communication needs and pupils with social, emotional and behavioral issues, to name a few.

We believe strongly that all children at Cedar Centre should be making oustanding progress in their learning and with this in mind we set challenging targets for them to meet. Progress towards these targets is monitored regularly and intervention programmes are put in place if pupils are not making expected progress.

We are a happy, caring school that believes that learning should be practical and relevant and above all it should be fun!

The Staff

The majority of teachers are part time subject specialists as they teach more than one subject, and teaching assistants don’t have subject specialism. 4 are HLTA and teach and take tutor groups. Staff attendance is generally good and we place great value on staff wellbeing, promoting a healthy life/work balance, and offering supervision, yoga and massage to staff after work. We have employed to assistant head teachers as the deputy head is nowpart time on 3 days a week. This has strengthened the leadership team with specific roles as leaders. Staff will be trained on promoting mental health across the curriculum as this is everybody’s business and it takes a whole school approach to make a difference. We will be working with EPs and CAMHS to promote this very important aspects of the learners’ life.

The Students

All students have either a statement or an EHCP. There are 72 students currently on roll across KS2, 3 and 4. Some of the students have been with us from the start, especially in secondary. About 35% of them come from mainstream schools, and approximately 10% join us throughout the academic year from mainstream schools locally or out of county. 30% of the students fall within the SEMH category, 20% are students on the ASC spectrum, and the others are young people with complex learning needs. 3 students are LAC, and 65% are eligible for FSM. 10% of our students are from different ethnic backgrounds. Working closely with the learners’ families help the students to feel listened to and we visit them at home for approximately 35% of the cases.
